Four Memories (2009)

for piano
duration: 11 minutes

Four Memories was written for my friend, pianist Laurel Karlik Sheehan, for her piano project “Five Minutes Please.” It was completed in October, 2009.

The four memories evoked are: “A Cache of Old Photos” (after the lyric in the Pet Shop Boys’ “Being Boring,” which I’ve always found especially moving), “1975″ (more than a memory, I actually wrote the first half of this piece in 1975, then put it away for 34 years), “Earls Court” (based on a fragment I sketched when I lived in Earls Court, London, in 1985), and “Remembering Thom Robinson,” a tribute to the memory of my friend, a composer who died too young.
