I wrote Prolegomenon in 1985 as part of my portfolio for my Master of Music degree at Peabody Conservatory. It was one of my first “elaboration” pieces, a form I invented in which I take a short piece or section of a piece (in this case, a chorale prelude I had written a year earlier) and stretch it into a longer work, transformed by various processes applied to the original material.
I plan to eventually revise Prolegomenon. In the meantime, here are two audio excerpts from a 1985 reading by the Peabody Symphony Orchestra conducted by Robert Van Mari.
